The frequent occurrence of algal blooms in freshwater bodies causes problems to water supply. Algal-derived organic materials, which contain more organic nitrogen than natural organic mater, could be considerable precursors of harmful nitrogenous disinfection by-products in disinfection (e.g., chlorination). In this study, formation of dihaloacetonitriles (DHANs) in chlorination of intracellular organic matters from M. aeruginosa under different conditions was investigated. Factors evaluated include contact time, chlorine dosage, pH, and bromide concentration. Increasing reaction time and chlorine dosage improved the formation of chlorinated DHANs. Neutral pH favored the formation of DHANs. Formation of dichloroacetonitrile and bromochloroacetonitrile increased as the bromide level increased, while the formation of dibromoacetonitrile followed an increasing and then decreasing pattern. To explore the formation mechanisms of DHANs from organic nitrogen, a quantitative empirical model was developed to describe the overall kinetics of DHANs. According to the model, contributions of major reactions in the formation of DHANs were evaluated.
