Abstract: The grand challenge of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) is to identify common sets of controlling features that determine the behavior of a wide variety of materials, ranging from metal alloys to complex heterogeneous structures (e.g. polymer nanocomposites). This gargantuan task is complicated by the intricacy of material structures, incomplete physics models, and finite computational capabilities.The MGI effort therefore emphasizes massive data collection, careful (meta)data curation and the development of 'Big Data' informatics methods capable of identifying key latent variables - 'the Genes' - that link material structures with their functions and properties. This presentation will describe some preliminary steps in this direction for polymers and nanocomposites, and show that the best use of Materials Informatics in this effort is not to develop 'end-to-end' heuristic models of material behavior, but instead to link together physics-based material behavior models at different length-scales.
