The ruthenium metallostannylene Cp*(iPr2MeP)RuH2SnDMP (DMP = 2,6-dimesitylphenyl) and metalloplumbylene Cp*(iPr2MeP)RuH2PbArTrip2 (ArTrip2 = 2,6-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)phenyl) have been synthesized from a novel dihydridoruthenate, Na[Cp*(iPr2MeP)RuH2] by salt metathesis with the divalent group 14 aryl halides. These compounds display a geometry with a significantly expanded M-E-C angle relative to similar compounds with less sterically demanding substituents on the group 14 elements. The metallostannylene reacts with iodoarenes to form proteoarene and the iodostannylene complex Cp*(iPr2MeP)RuH=SnIDMP, with observed intermediate formation of what we believe is a dihydridoruthenium diaryliodostannyl complex resulting from addition of the aryl iodide to the metallostannylene. The metallostannylene also reacts with C=O double bonds and O-atom transfer reagents to form insertion products.
