A series of fluorescent dye doped silica nanoparticles (DDSN), surface modified with terpyridine moieties were evaluated for their ability to quench fluorescence by addition of metal ions. The fluorescent signal decreased most for Pb(II) and Cu(II) and was dependent upon dye and terpyridine loadings. Various synthetic methods to create the nanoparticles will be presented, along with new results on next generation core-shell silica nanoparticles such as those designed as metal ion displacement sensors.
