Motivated by synergistic properties achieved in multicomponent nanostructures, and based on established methods for single component metal chalcogenide (MQ) particle gels, but seeking a practical method for co-gelation of different component particles with complimentary functionalities, the demonstrated chemical mechanism for gel formation is the oxidation of surface chalcogenides (Q2-) to form (Q2)2- linkages. For gel coupling of these quantum dots with differing Q, we expect the relative redox characteristics of Q, will govern the reaction rate, and the homogeneity of the composite. In this presentation the kinetics of gelation for CdQ as a function of Q (S, Se, Te) as well as capping agent characteristics (sterics, polarity), using dynamic light scattering and SAXS will be presented and the potential to exploit this information will allow for programmable assembly of multicomponent gels with control of heterogeneity will be discussed.
