Cadmium selenide nanocrystals have become popular as fluorescent tags in a number of applications, especially in biological studies. The synthesis of these nanoparticles is often achieved through the use of toxic selenium precursors.  Also used are trioctylphosphine and trioctylphospine oxide, which are difficult to replace with any other surface-capping reagent for further functionalization. A method using more environmentally-friendly reagents has been used in recent years involving elemental selenium and mineral oil. There have been issues controlling the size of the nanocrystals and we have undertaken studies to address this by modifying reaction conditions and addition of reagents. The nanocrystals will be further functionalized with DNA and results of optimal conditions will be reported.
