The exploration of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) has attracted much attention for biogedragable drug delivery in a controlled manner. The size  of PLLA micriparticles are strongly dependent on the specific preparation method. The size of the particels also affects the rate of delivery and total dose of drug available for devliery. In this research, simple and novel approaches were exploited to synthesize PLLA particles containing the NO donor S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP). The size of SNAP/PLLA particles (50 �m or 100 �m) can be tuned by controlling preparation conditions. It was found that, under the illumination of a 470 nm LED light, NO release from the 50 �m SNAP/PLLA particles was faster than that from 100 �m particles. Furthermore, the composition of SNAP/PLLA particles also affected the NO release. The ultimate goal of this work is to mechanically entrap the SNAP/PLLA particles in an injectable hydrogel for local NO delivery to fight device associated infections that are difficult to treat with antibiotics.
