Nickel-catalyzed Kumada and Suzkuki�Miyaura cross-coupling reactions provide a robust strategy for the synthesis of enantioenriched triarylmethanes.  These moieties are found in medicinal agents, including anti-cancer agents, and have applications in materials chemistry.  The stereochemical aspects of both transformations, along with implications for the mechanisms of other alkyl cross-coupling reactions, will be discussed. Application of stereospecific nickel catalysts to the development of related multi-step transformations will also be discussed in detail.
