The interaction of small molecules, such as H2, with transition metal surface have been widely studied for several decades, due to that the metal-hydrogen interaction is crucial for understanding the mechanisms of a number of important heterogeneous catalytic reactions, such as the Fischer-Tropsch process and the hydrogenation process. However, there are little literatures concerning about applying the hydrogen interaction to synthesis transition metals catalytic materials.Herein, we demonstrate a clear morphology and phase transition of cobalt nanocrystals induced by cobalt-hydrogen interactions. Cobalt nanoparticles formed at the absence of hydrogen, while hierarchical cobalt nanostructures were synthesized at the present of hydrogen. XRD analysis shows that the growth of hexagonal phase of cobalt is promoted by the cobalt-hydrogen interactions. The cobalt-hydrogen interaction is demonstrated to be a powerful strategy to construct unique hierarchical metal nanostructures. These hierarchical cobalt nanostructures show better activity than the regular cobalt nanoparticles for the hydrogenation of acetophenone.
