Multicomponent reactions (MCR) are highly valued in medicinal chemistry.[1] In materials science, however, multicomponent reactions have not been explored in great detail until recently. Li and co-workers employed the Passerini reaction for the polymerization and obtained poly(ester amide)s[2] and polyamides.[3] The Passerini reaction is a three-component reaction (3CR) between aldehydes (ketones), carboxylic acids and isonitriles. The product of a Passerini reaction is a depsipeptide (or ester amide). In order to obtain polymers, two out of the three components must be at least bifunctional (higher functionalities would lead to branching and crosslinking).[4] Assuming only homofunctional monomers, three different routes towards polymers via the Passerini reaction appear feasible. The Ugi reaction is a four-component reaction (4CR) between aldehydes (ketones), carboxylic acids, isonitriles and amines. To allow for a polymerization, two out of four components need to be bifunctional. Thus six routes towards polymers using only homodifunctional monomers are possible, in theory.
