A metastable tris(N,N'diphenylhydrazido) manganese(IV) complex, Li2Mn(?2-N2Ph2)3 (1) was synthesized by reductive cleavage of diphenyl hydrazine. Magnetic and electronic properties of 1 were explored with EPR, solid-state magnetometry, infrared spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These studies suggested dimerization of 1 to an anti-ferromagnetically coupled dimeric complex. UV-Vis decomposition studies were performed and suggest the complex dimerizes into a stable configuration in non-coordinating solvents while coordinating solvents lead to decreased stability and decomposition to Mn(II) compounds. Further studies, as well as isolation and characterization of these new compounds, will be presented.
