Metal-Organic Frameworks(MOFs) are promising materials for the storage of fuel gases like methane and hydrogen, but so far they fall short of targets for gravimetric and volumetric capacity set to ensure superior performance compared to current fuel technologies. Recently, theoretical studies have shown that lithium doping is a viable way to increase hydrogen uptake near ambient conditions, by increasing the isosteric heat of adsorption of hydrogen to the material. Li+ ions may be more easily incorporated into certain MOFs. For instance, many indium MOFs possess a negatively charged framework which may stabilize the presence of lithium ions in the pores. Here we present progress made in the enhancement of pore size, BET surface area, and H2 uptake in ionic MOFs, due to the replacement of bulkier counterions with Li+. In addition, changes in the crystal structure of one of the MOFs were observed, showing a shift in the framework caused by the differing synthesis conditions. This was confirmed with sorption measurements, ICP-MS, and single-crystal and powder XRD measurements.
