Carba-closo-dodecaborate anions with functional groups are potential building blocks for an increasing number of applications,1 e.g. as ligands in catalytic transformations with transition metals.2 The properties of functional groups that are bonded to the {closo-1-CB11} cluster are strongly dependent on the further substituents that are connected to the carborane cage. Similarely, the stability of the {closo-1-CB11} cage depends on the substitution scheme.Carba-closo-dodecaborate clusters with a CN,3 NH2,4 PR2 (Hal, iPr),5 or HgPh6 group that is bonded to the Ccluster atom and either hydrogen or halogen substituents that are connected to the boron atoms have been studied. Especially, the properties of substituents that are bonded to the parent cluster {1-R-closo-1-CB11H11} differ from those that are bonded to the halogenated derivatives {1-R-closo-1-CB11Hal11}. This different behavior is a result of the less electron defficient cage of the nonhalogenated derivatives in comparison to their halogenated counterparts. Whithin the series of halogenated clusters the undecafluorinated cage exhibits an significantly higher reactivity than the clusters with chlorine, bromine, and iodine substituents.
