Frustrated Lewis pairs have been recently employed in the reduction of imines, nitriles, aziridines, N-hetrocycles, olefins, alkynes, and polyaromatics.  Although the substrate scope has dramatically broadened in recent years, these results have relied primarily on the use of the strongly Lewis acidic borane, B(C6F5)3.   One of the research topics in the Heiden group is to probe the thermodynamics of hydrogen transfer in both metal-free and metal based catalysts for insight into the design of new hydrogen transfer catalysts.  This talk will discuss how comprehension of the activation of dihydrogen with B(C6F5)3 can lead to the development of new frustrated Lewis pairs for reduction chemistry.
