Solid phase products of Mn(II) oxidation were examined in the absence or the presence of solid substrates (Cr(OH)3(s) or birnessite). Hausmannite was formed from homogeneous Mn(II) oxidation ([Mn(II)]0 = 50 � 994 �M) at pH 9.0 open to the atmosphere. In the presence of 1.0 g/L Cr(OH)3(s) otherwise under the same conditions, Mn(II) oxidation product was analogous to birnessite. When 1.0 g/L each of Cr(OH)3(s) and birnessite were reacted at pH 7 - 9, the former was readily oxidized by the latter. During the redox reaction, a secondary Mn oxide was detected at all pHs at different extents and was identified as feitknechtite. The effect of feitknechtite formation was apparently substantial on the extent of Cr(OH)3(s) oxidation. These results suggest that the factors controlling the formation and phase transformation of Mn oxides should be clearly elucidated to understand the fate and transport of various contaminants in the environment.
