CuInS2 quantum dots attract a lot of attentions due to its bright emission and low toxicity. However, like other kinds of quantum dots, CuInS2/ZnS quantum dots are not stable enough as phosphor to survive upon long time irradiation of blue light in LED. In an effort to improve photo-stability of CuInS2 quantum dots (QDs), we have synthesized CuInS2 quantum dots with thick ZnS shell. These QDs were characterized by photoluminescence, HRTEM, XRD and EDX analysis. The improved photo-stability was demonstrated both in solution and solid state, and photo-bleaching tests upon irradiation of high power blue LED light. When core and core/shell QDs with different thickness shell were subjected to the illumination of LED light (450 nm, 0.25W/cm2), cores showed photo-bleaching within 1 hours; CuInS2 QDs with 2-3 ZnS layers completely degraded in 24 hours, while CuInS2 QDs with 10 ZnS layer solutions have presented much more stable photo-stability and photoluminescence remained over 100 hours without significant degradation. It indicates the thick ZnS can prevent CuInS2 from being oxidized during the irradiation. These highly stable Cadmium-free quantum dots will provide new opportunities for QDs in the application of lighting industry.
