A steady-state model describing photofacilitated transport under in liquid membranes under double illumination is used to predict Na+ ion transport in an experimental system optimized to study singly illuminated transport. The model for doubly illuminated photofacilitated liquid membranes suggest that solute flux can be up to two times greater under double illumination than under single illumination for a wide range of carrier and membrane properties. We wish to test this prediction using an experimental system that showed reasonable agreement with simulation results for a model describing photofacilitated transport under single illumination. Unfortunately, the program used to simulate transport won't tolerate the experimental conditions so predicted values for flux under double illumination versus single illumination cannot be calculated directly. Our approach is to simulate flux under conditions the program will tolerate and extrapolate to the experimental conditions. Our preliminarly trends indicate that sodium ion flux under double illumination will be about 1.75 times greater than under single illumination. We are also in the process of simulating the experimental system's potential for photofacilitated transport against a concentration gradient.
