Sponges continue to be the source of some of the most unusual fatty acids reported to date from marine organisms. Over the years, our search for novel fatty acids from marine sponges has unveiled a new class of a-methoxylated phospholipid fatty acids with a myriad of chain lengths, unsaturation and methyl branching patterns, and more importantly, enhanced biological activities (such as antiprotozoal and anticancer) as compared to the most traditional mammalian fatty acids. In this work we present the isolation and characterization of yet another complete new family of a-methoxylated fatty acids from the rare Caribbean sponge Asteropus niger. Some of these unusual fatty acids comprise a novel a-methoxylated octadecatrienoic fatty acid and a new family of  iso/anteiso a-methoxylated ?5,9 fatty acids with chain lengths between 27 and 29 carbons. The complete characterization of the novel fatty acids and possible galactocerebrosides by several analytical techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), NMR, and UPLC-MS, together with the biological implications of these results will be presented.
