 Chromenes and chromanones are widely studied biologically useful molecules, which can serve as intermediates in the total syntheses of certain natural products and medicinal agents. Compounds containing the chromene backbone have been shown to exhibit a wide range of activity, for example as potential treatments for Alzheimer's disease, CNS disorders, carcinomas, and HIV. We have employed a novel method for the synthesis of substituted chromenes utilizing mild reaction conditions and commercially available starting materials, which can undergo further cross-coupling reactions at the bromine and chlorine positions to give a wide array of new chromene analogues. To the best of our knowledge, synthesis of chromenes with this particular substitution pattern has not yet been reported.
