Organobismuthanes are organometallic reagents that possess a C-Bi bond. These reagents have found increasing use in organic synthesis in recent years in part due to the low costs and low toxicity associated with bismuth salts. Organobismuthanes can be prepared from inexpensive and non toxic bismuth salts and offer a mild reactivity that allow the presence of numerous functional groups on the substrate as well as on the organometallic species.Our group has reported over the past years a portfolio of reactions based on trivalent and pentavalent organobismuth reagents. In this presentation, our latest results on the preparation of highly functionalized organobismuthanes by functional group manipulation on the organometallic species will be presented. The use of these functionalized reagents in the development of new methodologies that lead to the construction of key bonds in medicinally relevant scaffolds will be illustrated.
