Reactions of GeAr2, SnAr2, and PbAr2 [Ar = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-(CH3)3)2] with the parent group 13 alkyls trimethylaluminum and trimethylgallium produced Ar2Ge(Me)AlMe2, Ar2Ge(Me)GaMe2, and Ar2Sn(Me)GaMe2 in good yields via insertion reactions. The reaction of SnAr2 with GaMe3 was observed to be reversible. In contrast, the reaction of trimethylaluminum with SnAr2 afforded the [1.1.1]propellane analogue Sn2{Sn(Me)Ar}3 in low yield, and the reaction of both AlMe3 or GaMe3 with PbAr2 resulted in the formation of the diplumbene {Pb(Me)Ar}2 and ArAlMe2 or ArGaMe2 via metathesis.
