Mineral dust and sea spray aerosols are abundant aerosols present in the Earth's atmosphere. Both mineral dust and sea spray aerosols show a range of heterogeneity in terms of their chemical composition, shape and size. For example, mineral dust aerosol is composed of a range of particle types of different mineralogy each exhibit different reactivates with atmospheric gases. Similarly, sea spray aerosol is composed of a range of particle types that include salts, biological components and organic compounds. The focus of this talk is on fundamental studies using spectroscopic and microscopic probes to better understand the chemical composition, size, shape and heterogeneous chemistry of mineral dust and sea spray aerosols.
