The solvent diffusion process in silica based sol-gel nano-thin film was investigated. The film was immersed in water, methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, and glycerol and the luminescence decay time constants of the photo-excited 3MLCT (metal-ligand charge-transfer) state of the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ ion dopant in the films were obtained. The KWW model explained the luminescence decays of the films in the methanol, 2-propanol, and glycerol. However, the luminescence decay of film immersed in water and ethanol were described by a single exponential decay. We found the solvent dependence in only the water and ethanol. The photodynamics was considered to be influenced by the interaction between dopant and residual solvents inside the cavity. The diffusion rates were examined as a function of sizes of encapsulated gold nanocolloidal particles by observing the color change of gold colloids as a function of time. The dopant-size dependence was analyzed by Beutler-Fano formula and the optimum diffusion rate was predicted to be achieved at the dopant size of 16 nm.
