The large scale industrial use of controlled radical polymerization techniques has been elusive to date, but the promise of intelligent surfaces, controlled morphologies, and other important advances in a number of scientific disciplines would suggest that the current state will change significantly in the not too distant future. Commercially successful coatings require control of coating surface energy, rheology, pigment dispersion, layer interactions, adhesion, and morphology. The current uses of controlled radical techniques in various coatings applications will be given, as well as predictions of future impacts that these techniques will have on the coatings industry.Several reasons for the slow adoption of CRP for industrial applications will be given and possible ways to overcome these paradigms will be discussed. Manufacturing hurdles and mitigation strategies will be considered.Nanopigments stabilized with a CRP produced polymer is one commercial application to be discussed.
