Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) represent a special class of polyelectrolytes, combining the physicochemical qualities of molecular ILs (e.g. chemical and thermal stability, high ionic conductivity) with the specific properties of polymers. This contribution aims at engineering novel imidazolium-based PILs into both statistical and block copolymer architectures and at taking advantage of the reactivity of the imidazolium ring. Figure 1: Poly(ionic liquid)s as reactive platform for various applications Firstly, air stable poly(N-vinyl-3-alkylimidazolium hydrogen carbonate)s (1  ) as well as a statistical PIL-based copolymer -of poly(N-vinylbenzyl imidazolium)-type backbone- ( coPIL2  ) were designed to generate polymer-supported N-heterocyclic carbenes, poly(NHC)s, formally by a loss of �H2CO3� in solution.1,2 Organocatalyzed reactions (e.g. benzoin condensation and cyclic carbonate formation) could be readily performed with excellent yields. The coPIL 2   was also employed as precursor for quantitative post-chemical modifications.2Secondly, novel PIL-based block copolymers were synthesized by sequential �cobalt mediated radical polymerization� (CMRP) of vinyl acetate and N-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium bromide, utilizing Co(acac)2 as controlling agent.3Their ability to generate ordered self-assembled mesostructures, both in solution and at the solid state was evidenced.1.
