The development of materials that can heal themselves after mechanical damage would greatly improve their lifetime and safety. A variety of dynamic covalent linkages have been built into polymers to achieve strong, yet reversible bonds. For example, the Guan lab demonstrated that the C=C bonds of polybutadiene can be dynamically exchanged in the presence of very low loadings of the Grubbs Gen-2 olefin metathesis catalyst, providing a new covalent dynamic mechanism for healing polymers (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012 , 134, 14226). Currently, various new dynamic interaction motifs are under investigation for self-healing in our laboratory. Progress on the synthesis of the polymer matrices, structural, thermal, and mechanical characterization, and self-healing properties will be presented in this presentation.
