There is a growing demand for flame retardant (FR) polymers that can be used in applications for the construction, electrical, transportation, and other industries. As new regulations and standards are being imposed upon the currently used FR additives, these substances are becoming obsolete. Due to the toxicity and environmental impact, an alternative to phosphates, bromides, and halogens is being researched. A possible alternative to these commonly used FR additives, is sodium tetraborate, ammonium and sodium alginate, and biobased FR agents. In the present work, these additives were melt processed with a poly(ethylene terephthalate) copolymer (PETG) as well as with various polyolefins with a weight percent varying between 5-30 wt%, flammability tested in accordance to the UL-94, and their thermal degradation behavior examined by TGA and the limiting oxygen index (LOI). The data for both tensile and flexural property testing will be presented as well.
