AbstractA square-planar dianionic cobalt(II) complex has been synthesized and its reactivity towards O2 and several oxidants have been studied.  Interestingly, this cobalt(II) complex rapidly cleaves the O-O bond of O2 rather than forming a stable O2-adduct.  The putative intermediate proposed is a cobalt(IV)-oxo complex for which we have reactivity, kinetic, spectroscopic, and mass spectrometry evidence.  Furthermore, the cobalt(II) species was found to react with various O-atom transfer reagents and give the same reactivity as when O2 was used.
