September 18, 2014 will mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of the seminal paper describing how interactions between d-orbitals lead to a quadruple and a delta bond in species with idealized D4h symmetry, in particular the Re2Cl82� anion (Cotton, F. A.; Curtis, N. F.; Harris, C. B.; Johnson, B. F. G.; Lippard, S. J.; Mague, J. T.; Robinson, W. R.; Wood, J. S. Science 1964  , 145, 1305). During this period, multiple techniques have provided the pieces of the puzzle that have contributed to the understanding of the delta bond.
