Hybrid materials, and more specifically organic/inorganic nanocomposite materials have been an area of materials research that has generated great interest from a variety of different fields. The material design lies on improving the functional synergy between different components, as mechanical resistance for inorganic materials, and specific properties for organic ones. Within this group, large surface composite structures offer great potential in surface property modification, separation, or electrical or optical properties, but they usually struggle with achieving a coherent interfacial frontier to strongly link both materials together, via a process that could be easily expanded to large surfaces. While we focus on the use of the macromonomer polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) and an inorganic substrate of titanium oxide, we highlight the use of the commercially available organophosphonic acid linker that has been shown to interface well between both PEGMEMA and the titanium oxide. We explain why not any organophosphoric acid linker is suitable for this application, and we present a synthetic route which can be used to coat and modify a ceramic porous support for future use as gas separation membrane.
