The study of the reaction of metal oxides with trace gases in the troposphere is an active research field since oxides are the primary constituent of mineral dust. Other components of mineral dust, such as sulfide minerals, are far less studied but could also impact the concentrations of these gases. FeS2 is the most common sulfide mineral however its reaction with trace gases such as NO and NO2 is not well understood. In this study, powdered FeS2 was reacted with NO and NO2 under high-vacuum conditions in separate experiments. Surface-bound products were detected using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy while gas phase products were detected with mass spectrometry. Product identity, their time evolution, and possible mechanisms will be discussed along with the differences between the reactions of FeS2 with NO and NO2.
