Crown ethers have found a wide use in various fields of chemistry owing their ability to selectively bind alkali and alkaline-earth metal cations, protonated amines and even neutral compounds. Based on properties of crown ethers, we synthesized a series of photoactive bis (4’-azo-4” (5)-substituted dibenzo-18-crown-6) carboxylic acid derivatives (4-azo-DB18C6) that demonstrate a reversible cis-trans isomerization. The complexation was triggered by a photochemical stimulus, using the well known cis-trans photoisomerization mechanism of azobenzene.<br/>
