Hydraulic fracturing techniques have enabled oil companies to reach previously inaccessible reserves in the states like North Dakota, triggering a turnaround in the state's economic development, domestic energy production, and resulting in new jobs. The state of North Dakota now ranks second behind only Texas in oil output nationwide. However, the rapid development of unconventional gas resources can not only exert stress on the regional water resources, but can introduce new pollutants (e.g brine and hundreds of other chemicals) into water bodies. The produced water from unconventional gas and oil exploration and production (UGOEP) can be hypersaline with several unfamiliar combinations of dissolved ions. Here, we present preliminary study that investigates the use of multi-effect evaporation distillation (MED) plant for treating produced water from UGOEP. The MED operation is sustained using waste heat from power plants.<br/>
