Over the last decade observations have come to show the importance of organic aerosol (OA) to the global particulate matter budget, as well as the importance of atmospheric processing which affects the lifecycle of these particles. Models lag behind in their representation of these processes, largely because of the lack of constraints on this dynamic and complex system. In this talk I will discuss the disconnect between laboratory and field observations of elemental composition of OA and how this impacts our ability to develop observationally-based model simulations.
