The metal partition coefficient Kd (L/kg) is the ratio of sorbed metal concentration on the solid phase m (mg/kg) to the dissolved metal concentration at equilibrium. The behavior of metals in surface water is complex and their partition coefficients can be impacted by many factors to varied degrees. Organic matter content in sediments, pH, redox status of the water, salinity, degree of bottom sediment mixing and temperature are factors that may influence speciation and partitioning of metals. The difficulty in describing the impacts and relationships is that these processes are interconnected with no dominant associations among all. In this study, we are investigating the partitioning of four metals (Cd, Co, Pb, and Zn) under different conditions of salinity, pH, organic matter content, temp, and redox status of water. A series of factorial experiments are evaluated in which three levels of organic of maters are tested each time against five levels each of salinity, pH; and at two levels each of temperature and redox potential. The design of experiments was generated by the statistical software program MiniTab16®. The randomized run orders are followed as created by the software when performing simulation runs. Multiple regression equations will be generated to predict Kd of each metal under the various conditions of the five factors tested.
