Polymeric biomaterials have exceptional potential but much more knowledge on how to optimize the polymeric structure, from nano-molecular to macro-functional level, is imperative for further and refined macromolecular design. Macromolecular design and synthesis of specific polymer architectures may be used as tools to obtain reproducibility in the fabrication of new conventional polymers with appropriate chemical and physical properties. Our research approaches comprises all steps from macromolecular design,1-3 adopting new monomers,4 better initiator systems,5 creating polymers with advanced structures,5 production of scaffolds and assessments of in vivo behavior6 and degradation pattern. 7-10 A wide range of pathways have been used to synthesize polymers with various architectures with the aim to control and vary their properties and functions. Synthesis of aliphatic polyesters is a key research area today when targeting the production of biodegradable materials intended for in vitro or in vivo usage. Among the materials synthesized are several homo- and copolymers of L-lactide, ɛ-caprolactone, 1,5-dioxepan-2-one and trimethylene carbonate in linear, branched and star-shaped architectures. These types of biodegradable materials show great potential for this usage since changes in the polymer behavior with respect to their physical, thermal and mechanical properties may be achieved by varying the chemistry and architecture of the polymer.
