Transition metal-catalyzed cross coupling has revolutionized the way that chemists assemble carbon–carbon (C–C) bonds. These reactions typically involve aryl or alkyl (pseudo)halide reaction partners, which represent a small subset of the electrophiles used in organic synthesis. Our laboratory is interested in developing new strategies for alkyl cross-coupling such that classic electrophiles in organic synthesis (epoxides, aziridines, iminium and oxocarbenium ions and their stable precursors) can participate in bond formation. This lecture will describe some of our recent progress in this area involving methodology development, ligand design, mechanistic investigations, and applications that permit modular and efficient access to enantioenriched amines and ethers.
