The Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser is the highest energy chemical laser developed to date. It operates on the energy transfer between atomic iodine and the first electronically excited state (a<sup>1</sup>D) of molecular oxygen. The excited oxygen is produced by the reaction between chlorine gas and basic hydrogen peroxide liquid. The gas flow is then passed thru a nozzle where molecular iodine is added. The processes leading to iodine dissociation are complex and an interesting area of investigation.
