When the conjugate base of hydrogen peroxide is used to initiate HO formation, the resulting system generates sufficient HO to be useful as an advanced oxidation process for treating contaminated water. However, the efficiency of the treatment process is limited by the reactivity of HO with hydrogen peroxide; too much initiator suppresses HO steady state and wastes ozone and peroxide. Here we report the application of a novel set of reductants for initiating HO formation, the one electron reduction products of phosphododecamolybdate, silicadodecatungstate and phosphododecatungstate. In these reactions POMs act as electron shuttles between dissolved organic carbon and ozone, effecting similar HO yields but without the HO “scavenging” issues associated with hydrogen peroxide. The efficiency and optimal pH conditions for their application are reported.
