Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have attracted significant attention due to their commercial applications in display and lighting technology, which are self-light emitting devices based on pi-conjugated organic molecules. The basic guidelines for OLED materials design are presented. Small molecular materials are discussed with emphasis on their material issues with respect to color, energy level, and charge transport by using quantum mechanical methods. The chemical nature of OLED materials and its impact on the operational device stability are discussed as well.
