The amount of federal funding available for traditional academic research has been trending downward for many years now, leading to an overall crunch in terms of outrageous pay lines in competitive fields and unfunded research programs.  Over the same time period, companies have been slashing their own R&D budgets in an effort to make the bottom line more attractive and please shareholders.  This combination has created a mutually beneficial opportunity for sponsored research and collaboration agreements between industry and universities.  In this talk, various models and strategies for partnerships currently in use will be discussed, as well as problem areas that may pop up before, during and after the agreements have been put in place.  In addition, some cooperative institutes that are already in place will be highlighted as examples of current endeavors working to bridge industry and academia.<br/>
