The Blue Moon Brewing Company was started by Keith Villa in 1995 as an operating unit of Coors Brewing Company. Over the last 19 years it has grown to the point where it currently produces the nation’s top-selling craft beer brand in Blue Moon Belgian White Ale. This ale is credited with introducing many current craft beer drinkers and some craft brewers to craft beer and in particular, Belgian-style craft beer. With the success of Blue Moon however, the early trials and tribulations of operating a Belgian-style brewing company within a larger brewery are often overlooked. With this in mind, the background of brewing, quality, marketing, and product development of Blue Moon within the confines of MillerCoors will be presented.
