Lophines (2,4,5-triphenylimidazole) are of interest due to their luminescent properties. 3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzaldehyde and 4-(diphenylamino)benzaldehyde were used to prepare lophine derivatives that possess electron-dontating groups on the aryl ring in the 2-position. The trimethoxy lophine was prepared in 70% yield and the diphenylamino lophine in 83% yield. Photophysical properties of both lophine derviatives were examined in acetonitrile solution at room temperature. The absorption maxima of the trimethoxy lophine were at 226 nm and 310 nm, and the emission maximum was at 387 nm. For the diphenylamino lophine, the absorption maxima were at 302 nm and 349 nm, and the emission maximum was at 408 nm. The lifetimes for the trimethoxy lophine and diphenylamino lophine were 1.8 and 1.5 ns, respectively.
