In 2013, Lin and coworkers reported the isolation of a novel antifungal compound, hippolachnin A, from the South China Sea sponge <i>Hipposongia lachne</i>. The strained cyclobutane residing at the core of this compact and stereochemically-rich natural product renders it a challenging synthetic target. An approach to hippolachnin A, wherein the core is rapidly assembled by a [π2+σ2+σ2] cycloaddition, will be presented.
