Helicenes and viologens (4,4'-bipyridinium salts) are both well-known important materials that have attracted considerable attention because helicenes have unique structural, spectral, and optical features, and viologens have excellent redox and electrochromic properties. Recently, the Clennan group designed a new type of hybrid material, helical viologens, which merge these two structural motifs. This is part of a larger effort in the Clennan group to determine if these new hybrid materials exhibit both the desirable redox properties of viologens and the electronic properties of the aromatic framework, and/or if new useful material properties, as a result of a synergistic interaction between the aromatic framework and viologen functional group, are observed. We will discuss the synthesis, photochemical and electrochemical properties of several helical viologens including those for the first example of a helical viologen, N,N'-dimethyl-5,10-diaza[5]helicene bistetrafluoroborate, <b>1<sup>2+</sup></b>. We will also compare these results for the helical viologens to similar data collected for their diaza-precursors and methyl viologen.
