<i>T. erythraem</i>—a species of photosynthetic cyanobacteria—is an integral part of the nitrogen and carbon cycles, accounting for an estimated 42% of annual reduced nitrogen production per year. However, it is poorly understood because of complications in lab culture despite being ubiquitous to marine environments. Therefore, little is known about its microscale behaviors and interactions between cells even with the high amount of natural habitat studies that have been conducted. We plan to address this dearth of information via construction of a metabolic network map and our well-documented lab culture routines that have already resulted in growth rates. In doing so, we will continue discovery of a major part of the global ecosystem.
