As an emerging class of porous molecular materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide a highly tunable platform to engineer heterogeneous catalysts for important reactions, such as asymmetric organic transformations, that cannot be achieved with traditional porous inorganic materials. In this context, we recently developed a robust and porous BINAP-based metal-organic frameworks (BINAP-MOF). Although BINAP has been received the most attention as a source of chirality in late transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions, it had not yet been utilized in the construction of MOF-based asymmetric catalysts.<br/>A mixture of Zr and a BINAP-derived dicarboxylate linker in DMF at 120 °C yielded BINAP-MOF (Figure 1), and it was post-synthetically metalated with Ru and Rh complexes. The post-synthetically metalated BINAP-MOFs provide a versatile family of single-site solid catalysts for catalyzing a broad scope of asymmetric organic transformations, including the addition of aryl and alkyl groups to α,β-unsaturated ketones, the hydrogenation of substituted alkene and carbonyl compounds, and other useful asymmetric reactions (Figure 2).
