The development history of RO membrane will be reviewed briefly. Emphasis of the presentation will be on the current research and future directions of R&D of anti-fouling membranes, anti-scaling membranes and devices, the application of nano technology to membrane chemistry and formation, and the design of spacers for membrane elements to achieve high water flux. In addition, the development of the low-energy membranes and the membrane with high rejection of boron will be discussed.
