Metal complexes with ligands that incorporate a Lewis acidic or Lewis basic functionality in the secondary coordination sphere have been shown to facilitate the formation or cleavage of C-H bonds, respectively.  With respect to the former, experimental design has been used to facilitate CO reduction in homogenous catalysts. In this presentation, tripodal ligands with a variety of Lewis acidic boranes or Lewis basic phosphines are incorporated into the secondary coordination sphere of metal complexes to modulate C-H bond formation and cleavage.
