Laboratory science is an ever-evolving practice, driven by changes in scientific technology and culture. Information management techniques and electronic instrumentation that emerged in the last two decades of the 20th Century have created new opportunities and challenges in maintaining the health and safety of both laboratory workers and the laboratory community as a whole. A common thread in addressing challenge is the knowledge and skill of laboratory workers in working with hazardous chemicals.<br/><br/>Understanding how these considerations impact social expectations of laboratory scientists practice with regard to specific chemical and biological safety issues is an important challenge of the 21st Century. Meeting this challenge will require the development of new skills for the chemist, not only in terms of personal protection, but also in communicating how they manage the potential impacts of their scientific practice.
